A SCIENCE NOTE
Yes, sadly it really is global warming — every region is being reshaped, though not equally. You’re right to be concerned if you live in northern countries that rely on the stability of the AMOC for temperate weather. The Arctic is now warming about 4 times faster than the global average (some regions within the Arctic warm at rates 10x). Northern Europe is warming roughly twice the global average, while southern Europe, Korea, and Japan are experiencing their hottest year on record.

The impacts are staggering: Europe has already endured more wildfire destruction in 2025 than in any year since records began. A hectare (ha) equals 2.47 acres, and by late August more than 1 million hectares had been scorched — an area larger than the entire country of Cyprus. According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), this marks the highest total since tracking began in 2006. Spain and Portugal have been hit hardest, with the Iberian Peninsula accounting for over two-thirds of the burned area.

These wildfires are not isolated disasters — they are part of a web of tipping points and feedback loops that extend far beyond southern Europe. Brown carbon deposition, loss of albedo from ice and snow melt, degradation of boreal forests, and thawing permafrost — some of which is now burning year-round — all feed into northern climate systems and directly affect the AMOC.

These regional extremes are connected symptoms of a planetary system in breakdown. The AMOC–jet stream feedback loop is destabilizing so quickly that the call to “wait for more data” no longer applies; the evidence is already unfolding before us. And this is only one piece of a much larger picture: at least nine major tipping points are now observable, interacting with one another in a cascading domino effect. Rather than acting independently, they are reinforcing each other and driving acceleration at an exponential pace.

Our climate model, integrating complex social-ecological factors, shows that global temperatures could rise by up to 9°C within this century — far beyond previous predictions of a 4°C rise over the next thousand years. This kind of warming could bring us dangerously close to the “wet-bulb” threshold, where heat and humidity exceed the human body’s ability to cool itself, leading to fatal consequences.

Tipping points and feedback loops drive the acceleration of climate change. When one tipping point is toppled and triggers others, the cascading collapse is known as the Domino Effect.

[Verse 2]
Ripped your cord
(Oh, lordy, lord)
Lost your sting

[Outro]
Your “be” stung me
(Mortally)
Stung… (we’re done)
Sting, stang, stung
(The swan has sung:)
Wronged the young

A SCIENCE NOTE
The song is a metaphor for climate change.

A honeybee dies after losing its stinger because the stinger is barbed and gets lodged in the skin of a thick-skinned target, such as a human or mammal. When the bee pulls away, it rips its own lower abdomen, along with its venom sac, muscles, and parts of its digestive tract, causing internal organ failure and leading to its death within a few hours.

Our updated climate model, now integrating complex social-ecological factors, shows that global temperatures could rise by up to 9°C within this century — far beyond previous predictions of a 4°C rise over the next thousand years. This kind of warming could bring us dangerously close to the “wet-bulb” threshold, where heat and humidity exceed the human body’s ability to cool itself, leading to fatal consequences.

ABOUT THE SONG
“Sting,” “stang,” and “stung” are verb forms related to the irregular verb “to sting,” which describes causing pain with a sharp point or a stinging sensation. “Sting” is the base form, “stung” is the correct past tense and past participle for the action (e.g., “The bee stung me,” “My eyes stung”), and “stang” is an archaic or rare past tense form that is largely considered obsolete in modern English.

The song is about how older generations have stung younger generations with their poisonous greenhouse gas venom.

ABOUT THE SONG: The Alarming Rise of Political Eugenics in U.S. Public Health Policy

The Trump administration has reignited global concerns about eugenics through its direct interference in science and public health. The latest controversy centers on the firing of the CDC director, followed by the resignation of four senior colleagues in protest. Their departures, citing the politicization of the agency and the deliberate manipulation of scientific data, mark a troubling erosion of trust in one of the world’s most critical health institutions.

Compounding the crisis, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has advanced policies that eliminate COVID-19 vaccinations for nearly the entire population, leaving access only for a select few. This decision is widely interpreted by public health experts as an assault on the most vulnerable groups—the elderly, the immunocompromised, and those with chronic illnesses. By stripping away essential protections, these moves are viewed as a calculated attempt at social Darwinism, where the weakest are effectively abandoned to disease.

Such actions reflect a disturbing convergence of politics and ideology with echoes of eugenics. Public health policy is being weaponized not to protect life, but to selectively determine whose lives are valued. The consequences are dire—not only for those directly at risk of COVID-19, but for the precedent it sets in allowing governments to ration care and manipulate science for ideological ends.

We don’t actually know who can get vaccinated right now—it’s not clear who is eligible, and it’s not even clear if insurance will consistently cover the cost. That uncertainty isn’t accidental. The committee responsible for approving the shot has been stacked with liars and frauds and isn’t even scheduled to meet until later in September. Under normal circumstances, the booster would have been approved months ago by a legitimate board.

This eugenics push is designed to create confusion, cast doubt on science, and restrict access to life-saving care. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller’s ultimate aim is to control reproduction and increase the occurrence of traits he and his allies deem “desirable,” with their main thrust being to weed out the “weak” before they breed. Stephen Miller has even defended HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. after the firing of CDC Director Susan Monarez, calling Kennedy “one of the world’s foremost voices, advocates, and experts on public health,” and praising him as “a crown jewel of this administration” working to “restore the credibility and integrity of the CDC as a scientific organization.”

But the danger extends to the entire population—we already saw the deadly consequences during Trump’s first administration, when millions died needlessly.

This moment demands vigilance. Scientists, health professionals, and the public must recognize the stakes: the erosion of evidence-based policy, the marginalization of vulnerable populations, and the dangerous normalization of eugenic thinking in modern governance.

ABOUT THE SONG
Many people ask, “Why does a scientist engage with climate deniers?”

As an educator, I see these interactions as an opportunity to reach a wider audience. Engaging with climate skeptics — what some might call ‘climate dummies’ — gives me the chance to correct misinformation in real time and provide fact-based explanations to others who may be quietly observing the conversation.

By addressing these false claims head-on, I can offer a legitimate, scientifically backed source of information to those seeking clarity in a sea of misinformation. This outreach is critical, especially when so many people are exposed to conflicting or inaccurate claims about climate change. My aim is not to argue for the sake of it, but to ensure that there are trusted voices out there providing clear, evidence-based information on the urgent reality of climate change.

In addition, their opposition is immensely educative in our efforts. In reality, their persistent denial of climate change has forced us to rethink and drastically rebuild our climate models. What were once “worst-case” scenarios have now become the “best-case” outcomes we are seeing today.

Tipping points and feedback loops drive the acceleration of climate change. When one tipping point is toppled and triggers others, the cascading collapse is known as the Domino Effect.

A SCIENCE NOTE

Chaos theory studies how small changes in initial conditions can lead to wildly different outcomes in complex systems. This is often called sensitive dependence on initial conditions — or famously, the butterfly effect — the idea that a butterfly flapping its wings in China could ultimately contribute to a hurricane forming in the Atlantic.

In chaotic systems:

  • Behavior looks random, but is deterministic underneath.

  • Predictability breaks down over time.

  • Feedback loops accelerate instability.

  • Thresholds or tipping points matter more than averages.

Our climate model — which incorporates complex socio-economic and ecological feedback loops within a dynamic, nonlinear system — projects that global temperatures could rise by up to 9°C (16.2°F) within this century. This far exceeds earlier estimates of a 4°C rise over the next thousand years, highlighting a dramatic acceleration in global warming. We are now entering a phase of compound, cascading collapse, where climate, ecological, and societal systems destabilize through interlinked, self-reinforcing feedback loops.

Tipping points and feedback loops drive the acceleration of climate change. When one tipping point is toppled and triggers others, the cascading collapse is known as the Domino Effect.
