[Silence]
[Instrumental, Guitar, Piano, Organ, Synth, Bass, Percussion, Drums]
[Chorus]
You reinforce
(Your natural course)
With a certain knack
(Of feedback)
Standing wave
(Phenomenon)
Strange to behave
Beyond on (on and on)
On and on
[Verse 1 – Storytelling]
Galloping Gertie, flexed in the wind
(November morning, forty miles in spin)
Twist and undulate, torsion unbound
(Flexible steel singing, haunting sound)
Cables shiver, deck begins to sway
(Engineered elegance, undone by day)
Resonance humming through the Puget Sound
(Chaos awakening, shaking the ground)
[Chorus]
You reinforce
(Your natural course)
With a certain knack
(Of feedback)
Standing wave
(Phenomenon)
Strange to behave
Beyond on (on and on)
On and on
[Verse 2 – Scientific Breakdown]
Nodes collide where the wind excites
(Antinodes rising, chaotic heights)
Energy loops in a torsional twist
(Bridges can shatter when forces persist)
Fluid dynamics, aerodynamics collide
(Steel and wind in a deadly stride)
History watching, engineers cry
(We learn too late, yet still we try)
[Bridge – Instrumental Breakdown]
Twist and undulate
(Gyrate)
Decks bending, girders resonate
(Apocalypse subtle, deliberate)
[Percussion, Sub Bass, Spoken Vocal]
Galloping Gertie
(Wasn’t so sturdy)
Echoes collapse
(Time unruly)
[Verse 3 – Philosophical Reflection]
All structures fail if feedback loops grow
(We built, we trusted, yet didn’t know)
Nature whispers in standing waves loud
(Sheer force of wind, silence of the proud)
Every bridge, every span, holds its breath
(Predicted or not, flirting with death)
We marvel, we panic, we record the fall
(Physics unyielding, the lesson for all)
[Chorus – Layered Vocals / Harmonics]
You reinforce
(Your natural course)
With a certain knack
(Of feedback)
Standing wave
(Phenomenon)
Strange to behave
Beyond on (on and on)
On and on
[Instrumental – Extended Jam]
[Organ Solo]
[Saxophone Solo]
[Guitar / Synth Waves]
[Organ Stabs, Driving Bass, Snare March]
[Outro – Droning Fade / Spoken Word]
Twist, torsion, collapse…
The bridge surrenders to the wind’s hand
Standing waves, standing waves…
On and on…
We watch, we learn…
Or we forget.
ABOUT THE SONG
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, nicknamed “Galloping Gertie,” famously collapsed on November 7, 1940, in Washington State due to a standing wave phenomenon induced by wind. The bridge’s flexible design caused it to twist and undulate intensely (torsional flutter) in 40 mph winds, creating dramatic waves before collapsing into the Puget Sound.
